In Panama there is a saying "The land where you were born calls you" this refers to the desire to see or recreate the traditions of your ancestors. Culturally we are a mixture of Indigenous, Spanish, and Caribbean. In my case the colors and symbols of my people are a physical representation of how strong and fragile a Panamanian woman can be. I recreate the Molas Kunas design, shown on the adornments worn by the women of the Kuna tribe*. Traditionally they used gold or cloth painted with plants to wear their Molas.
My art is in tribute to the women of Panama to demonstrate their fragility and beauty, but also strength.
Metals, mostly copper, fused with enamel. Wires are used to recreate the Molas Kunas design, shown on the adornments worn by the women of the Kuna tribe.
*Kuna is the original term used prior to a orthographic reform, the Congreso General de la Nacion Gunadule (General Congress of the Gunadule Nation) has promoted the spelling to Guna
